Diwali, the festival of lights, is a special time to get together and celebrate the festive season in the company of family and friends. It is also a time remember our elders who have given us so much to bring us where we are in our lives today.
Since the formation of the club in 1994, Godiva Lions have been supporting in holding Diwali Celebrations at Frank Walsh House Day Care Centre in Coventry for the elderly residents and day visitors, to include a musical entertainment show and dinner to celebrate the festive season, until the Centre’s closure 3 years ago.
The Club’s support has since continued with the Sewa Shakti Project based at Harp Place, Sandy Lane, Coventry. This is a self-help voluntary organisation that aims to provide a Day Centre Facilities for the elderly and less-abled people living in the communities. The activities include workshops and advice on various matters such as personal health and well-being, social, welfare, legal and financial matters amongst others of relevance to members in their twilight years, talks on health matters, yoga classes, computer classes, provision of lunch and refreshments and coach trip outings for members. The Volunteers also organise charitable activities such as collecting for Foodbank Coventry, Sponsored walks, Tin-Collection and Clothes collections and for Sewa International UK for their local and International charities.
The Diwali Luncheon held on 5 November 2015, was attended by the Vice President Lion Sharan together with a few Lion members. There were around 100 members who attended the functions. Special Diwali prayers were recited and members of the group provided entertainment, including singing, dancing and drama. This was followed by special Diwali delicacies and a sumptuous vegetarian lunch.
Indravadanbhai Gandhi, one of the team of dedicated and hard working volunteers said “we would not be able t o provide this self-less service to the community without support from members and many well wishers. I would especially like to thank Godiva Lions Club over the past few years for sponsoring our Diwali function”.
On 25 November 2015, the Club was honoured to support the Diwali and Christmas Lunchoen organised by Dosti Friendship Group, which is run by Age UK.
Age UK said, “The Party was part funded by the Lions Club of Coventry Godiva; to whom we owe a huge thank you. Not only did they donate £500 towards the event, but they also came along on the day to offer valuable support in making the event run so smoothly. In total we had 100 older South Asian clients, with some special guests who came along to help us celebrate in style. Lady Godiva and her Sisters gave an exceptional performance, which saw many of our group members enthralled in the history of this iconic figure. Along with delicious Asian food and some fantastic traditional Indian singing and dancing, all had a wonderful day. We had a lovely time, and appreciate the effort to include everyone.”
We are very grateful to George Perkins Trust for their donations of £500 annually for the past few years to support our activities for the benefit of the Elderly. Thank you also to our Lions Subhash and Indu Aggarwal for their support of £280 for the 2015 Diwali functions.
