In the year 2006/2007, the President’s charity chosen for the year was Cancer Research UK. This dreaded disease has affected many of our members either with a close family member or someone we know being affected by it.
Various fundraising events were organised in the year including the Godiva Lions Mela, Diwali Night, Frank Walsh House Diwali Function, New Year’s Eve Party and the Annual Charity Golf Tournament amongst other events. A formal presentation of a cheque for £5,501 to the Charity was made at the Club’s Charter night in April 2007
Extract from Cancer UK Website:
“Over the last 40 years, cancer survival rates in the UK have doubled. In the 1970s just a quarter of people survived. Today that figure is half.
Our ambition is to accelerate progress and see three quarters of patients surviving the disease within the next 20 years.
This requires us to set an ambitious new agenda for cancer research, substantially increasing our investment, pioneering new approaches and bringing new disciplines to bear on the cancer problem.”
