DIABETES

Diabetes is a pressing global concern with dire long-term health implications. Alarmingly, many individuals, particularly those in South Asian communities, are vulnerable due to their dietary and lifestyle habits. In the UK, 4.3 million people in the UK live with diabetes. 850,000 people could be living with diabetes who are yet to be diagnosed. Among the two prevalent types - Type 1 and Type 2 - the latter is more widespread. Around 90% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Our recent event aimed to amplify awareness regarding diabetes-associated risks and complications. It also focused on empowering individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles, thereby reducing the chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. The Lions Club of Coventry Godiva is dedicated to hosting such events annually, furthering diabetes awareness in local communities.

Lions Club of Coventry Godiva - Diabetes Awareness Day Event

In observance of World Diabetes Day, the Lions Club of Coventry Godiva annually hosts Diabetes Awareness Days at local Gurudwaras, Temples, Churches, and Community Centres.

The Lions Club Godiva's mission is to highlight the profound effect that diabetes can have not only on the patients but also on their families and support systems.

These events are designed to be interactive, allowing community members and families to openly discuss health concerns. To assist attendees who primarily speak Punjabi, the Lions Club of Coventry Godiva ensures that Punjabi-speaking volunteers are present to bridge any language gaps.

A hallmark feature of these gatherings is the preparation and serving of a wholesome vegetarian meal. This serves to underline the significance of nutritious eating. The menu often includes items like fruit salad, vegetable salad, and dhokla (a steamed chickpea flour dish). The club's volunteers are hands-on, engaging in everything from chopping vegetables to cooking the meal on-site.

With a steadfast commitment to the cause, the Lions Club of Coventry Godiva intends to organize similar events year after year, thereby intensifying diabetes awareness in local communities.
